Brief Introduction of Gandhi Sabarmati Ashram of the University:

Sabarmati Ashram is an ashram founded by Mahatma Gandhi in Ahmedabad. This ashram is located on the west bank of Sabarmati river. In 1915, the Ashram was moved to the banks of the Sabarmati river in 1917 in the Kochrab area of Ahmedabad. Many followers of Mahatma Gandhi and his wife Kastura Ba Gandhi and Vinoba Bawe stayed in this Ashram for a total of twelve (12) years. Sabarmati Ashram was the place of implementation of all Gandhiji’s independence activities and his thoughts and ideas.

A replica of such a historic building has been constructed by the Karnataka State Rural Development and Panchayat Raj University in its new avarana as a motivational center to carry out activities based on Gandhiji’s philosophy, thought and ideals and inculcate them in the younger generation, this Sabarmati Ashram was inaugurated on November 11, 2020. The ashram aims to carry out national, educational, social, economic and skill development activities.

This ashram is 22.91 m. Length 15.28 m. Has a wide area. The ashram includes a prayer hall, Gandhi-Kasturaba Mandir, charaka mandir, library, Nayitaleem house and a statue of Gandhijnana as in Mahatma Gandhi’s original Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad.

Missions of the Ashram:

Experimentation with creative activities related to agriculture, animal husbandry, khadi industry and rural development.

Carrying out activities based on Gandhiji’s concept of ‘Naye Taleem’.

Making it a model center focusing on self-reliance employment, agriculture and literacy.

Cultivating a new social structure of truth and non-violence.

Encouraging youth and students to take appropriate initiatives for rural development.

To encourage study and research activities on Gandhiji’s life.

Activities of the Ashram:

Gandhi Chintana -Mantana and Satsang Program:

The Gandhi Chintana -Mantana and Satsang Program is held every month on 11th at Sabarmati Ashram. So far, 50 programs have been completed. The primary aim of this initiative is to spread Gandhi’s philosophy and foster Gandhi’s values among students and youth’s .

  • Promotion and sale of Khadi:

Activities on promotion of Khadi, promotion of use and sale of Khadi materials were launched from February 2021 at Sabarmati Ashram. Khadi accessories are being sold at the ashram for the last two years along with providing information about this to the public visiting the ashram. More than 20 thousand income from the sale of Khadi items has been given to the Khadi Gramodyoga Institute. Diphloma

Diphloma – Course- Gandhian Thoughts and Actions:

A one-year diploma course has been introduced in the Ashram in the academic year 2021-22 on the theme of Gandhian Thoughts and Actions. Any interested candidates with PUC qualification can study this course. This diploma course aims to impart Gandhiji’s thought, ideas and principles in a skill-based manner.

Spinning Training:

Spinning training program for a team of university students was launched on February 05, 2021. Mr. Manjunath Kinnala, Secretary of Mr. Maruti Handloom Institute of Gadag-Betageri Nagar and trainees from the ashram will provide this training. Presently the ashram has 2 kerchiefs, a skill development unit in the university dedicated to handicrafts, through which training is being imparted to interested students as part of the Nayitalim programme.

Service Fund:

Seva Nidhi was established on October, 02, 2021 for social service in line with the vision that service to the downtrodden Dalits is the ultimate worship under the motto “Burning like Samidha in the Yajna of Service”. The money collected in this fund is used for social service.

Daily Bhajan:

The Nitya Bhajan program was launched on July 03. 2022 in the motivational perspective of Mahatma Gandhi’s Nitya Bhajan. Daily prayer and meditation is conducted in the ashram from 9.30 am to 9.45 am.

Details of total visitors to Shram:

Sabarmati Ashram Interview has been started from December 31. 2024. Public and dignitaries from all districts of the country including Gadag district and from many parts of the country have visited the ashram to view the ashram. So far (Dec. 11, 2020 to Dec. 31, 2024) 39672 people have visited Sabarmati Ashram.
