Programs
M.Sc. in Geoinformatics (Remote Sensing and GIS)
ABOUT
THE PROGRAMME
The
term “Geoinformatics” applies to both science and technology and integrates
remote sensing, photogrammetry, Geographic Information System (GIS), Global
Positioning System (GPS), geodesy, surveying, mapping the features of Earth,
geomatics engineering, navigation, cartography, artificial intelligence,
database management and project management. Geoinformatics is a modern
discipline which integrates acquisition, processing, analysis, discrimination
and management of spatially referenced data, i.e. data identified according to
their locations. It uses terrestrial,
marine, airborne and satellite-based sensors to acquire spatial and other data.
It includes the process of transforming spatially referenced data from different
sources into common Information Systems with well-defined accuracy
characteristics. It is interdisciplinary in nature, drawing domain expertise
from a range of frontier technologies. The real-world problems of development
are analyzed much more comprehensively and addressed more scientifically by
their virtual representation, incorporating socio-economic data for better
decisions and solutions. This technology is applied in rural development,
natural resources and environmental management.

Post-graduates in Geography, Geology and Environmental Science Hence
they may also apply.
CAREER SCOPE AND EMPLOYMENT PROSPECTS
The
Government and Private sectors are in greater need of Geoinformatics
professionals. The major Central Government agencies employing GIS specialists
include the Department of Space, Defense, Indian Space Research Organization
(ISRO), Survey of India(SOI), Geological Survey of India, Census of India,
National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), NATMO, NIC, Department of Agriculture
and the Department of Home, besides, State Remote Sensing Applications Centers,
State Government Departments, RDPR Department
Health department , Multi National Companies and Corporate sectors; GIS
BPO and mobile GIS companies are the principal
organizations that are keenly awaiting quality Geoinformatics
professionals.
Global
GIS firms like Tele Atlas and ESRI have set up captive centers in India. Major
telecom firms like Motorola, Cingular, Lucent, Saudi and Bahrain also outsource
to India. The most prominent GIS BPOs in India are RMSI, Rolta, TCS, InfoTech
and Genesis. Various job titles in the private sector are GIS Coordinator,
Database Analyst, Consultant/Project Manager, Applications Programmer, GIS
Software Product Specialist, GIS Instructor, Database and System Integrator,
GIS analyst, GIS Sales Manager, GIS Data Manager, GIS Specialist, GIS Manager,
Mobile GIS Specialist etc.
